Abstract

This article begins with a brief historical account of the formation of the post-revolutionary Mexican political regime and the conceptualisations to which it has been subjected, followed by a presentation of the characteristics of what has come to be known as democracy and democratic transition, and culminating in an exercise to contrast it with the current Mexican reality. On the basis of the evidence presented, it is concluded that Mexico should not be considered a democratic country, and that despite the political alternation during the first twelve years of the new century, there has not been a change in the political regime that would allow us to speak of a transition to democracy.
