The article verifies to what extent the actions and reactions of the Jair Bolsonaro government in Brazil approximate the characteristics of populism. We use journalistic materials that describe actions of the aforementioned government and videos with speeches by Bolsonaro. Based on recent theoretical production, it is possible to identify the characteristics of populism in the movement that brought Bolsonaro to power and in his government. We maintain that efficient communication with ideological foundations allowed the maintenance of an important mobilized and active base. Despite misunderstandings and generalizations, this government doesn’t have elements to be classified as fascist or neo-fascist, the confusion stems from the fact that modern populism has incorporated characteristics of fascism.
