Measurement and analysis of punitivism using a web survey

Authors

Abstract

Although there is no consensus definition of punitivism within academia, many authors define it as a preference among citizens for ever tougher criminal policy with emphasis on largescale and extended imprisonment. In this article, we offer a critical discussion of the punitive orientation of citizens’ demands for security and its legitimizing use of repressive policies and discourses. In addition, we present the elaboration and validation of a scale for the measurement of punitivism among residents of Chile aged 15 years and over by means of a web survey. The findings provide evidence of reliability, validity, and metric invariance of the scale by sex, educational level, and political orientation. Our scale is available to those who may benefit from it in their future research.
